Bob Mayo's live spot news, government and political coverage are a strong part of WTAE Channel 4 Action News.

Mayo is a native Pittsburgher who has covered the region for nearly three decades. He is the winner of more than 30 awards for excellence in journalism, including national state, and regional honors. He was lead reporter in WTAE's team coverage of the 2003 hepatitis outbreak in Beaver County. That continuing coverage garnered both a second place National Headliner Award and a prestigious first place national Edward R. Murrow Award from the Radio-TV News Directors Association.

In addition to his general assignment reporting, Mayo's duties at WTAE Channel 4 Action News have included "Ad Check," in which he analyzes political campaign ads for accuracy. While the station's Washington County Bureau Chief (2002-2003), his beat included Washington, Fayette, and Greene counties in Pennsylvania as well as Morgantown, W.Va. Previously, his live coverage was a part of Channel 4 Action News This Morning. He has been with WTAE since 1994.

Mayo is a past president of the Pittsburgh Chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists (1987-88) and has continued to serve for many years on the local SPJ's board and programming committee.

He served as program chairman for two SPJ multi-state regional conferences: "The Media in the New Millennium" (2001), which focused on the continuing convergence of new and traditional media, and "Navigating the Information Superhighway and News Media" (1995). SPJ Region 4 includes Western Pennsylvania, Ohio, Michigan and West Virginia.

Mayo is a former vice-president (1992-1993) and board member (1993-1995) of the Press Club of Western Pennsylvania and served three times as media co-chair of the Golden Quill Awards Committee (1993-1995, 1999). He conceived and coordinated the establishment of a Golden Quill historical archive with the Historical Society of Western Pennsylvania.

Mayo is also a former state coordinator with the Radio-TV News Directors Association (1986 -1988). He organized an RTNDA multi-state regional conference held in Pittsburgh which was co-sponsored with SPJ (1988).

He was one of 28 journalists from across the country chosen for the 1996 Society of Professional Journalists Taishoff Broadcast Fellowship, and attended the Taishoff Seminar at CNN. Taishoff Fellows are chosen on the basis of past achievements in the broadcast field. The seminar is designed to identify the future leaders of the broadcast industry and provide them with the tools they need to grow into the challenges they will face in the industry.

Mayo was also chosen as a member of the inaugural class (1984-85) of Leadership Pittsburgh, a major community leadership development program. He was on the Leadership Pittsburgh Alumni Committee (1985-86) and Media Task Force (1986-1988).

He once served on the Board of Directors of The Pittsburgh New Music Ensemble and its Steering Committee for "Music Lives: The Pittsburgh International Music Festival" (1986-1987).

Prior to joining WTAE-TV, Mayo was known for his work as a radio journalist. He was a city hall reporter for WTAE Radio (1989-1994), focusing on the mayor's office and city council, and he was a part of the station's morning show, "Newsline."

He has also been a News Coordinator at WWSW Radio (1978-1988) and a News Editor at KQV (1977-1978), Pittsburgh's all-news radio station.

In late 2006, Mayo launched a blog titled "The Busman's Holiday," which often deals with news stories he's covering. It can be found at thebusmansholiday.blogspot.com or under the "Blogs" section on the homepage of WTAE's Web site, ThePittsburghChannel.com.

Mayo is a University of Pittsburgh graduate (1977) who lives in the North Hills with his wife, Yvonne.
