2010: A Pittsburgh Snow Odyssey

See How This February Stacks Up Through The Years

There's no business like snow business, and it's booming in western Pennsylvania, where the record for Pittsburgh's snowiest month was already broken with two days remaining.

Weather Watch 4 meteorologist Stephen Cropper said 42.8 inches of snow had fallen in February as of early Friday evening. The month ended Sunday night with a final tally of 48.7 inches.

The old record for most snow in a month was 40.2 inches in January 1978. Back then, a pair of storms hit back-to-back and put down 27 inches of snow over a four-day period.

In addition to the monthly record, February 2010 also includes Pittsburgh's fourth-largest snowstorm ever -- the one that brought 21.1 inches from the evening of Feb. 5 into the afternoon of Feb. 6.

All of the recent snow sent Cropper looking through the Pittsburgh weather record books, trying to find the region's most notable storms through the years.

In January 1964, there was a storm that dropped 1 1/2 feet of snow in 28 hours.

In March 1993, there was the "blizzard of '93." It socked Pittsburgh with nearly 24 inches of snow in 24 hours and shattered a one-day record that stood for more than 100 years. It forced the closures of Pittsburgh International Airport, the Pennsylvania Turnpike and all major interstates.

Pittsburgh snow history

Pittsburgh's snowiest season in history was the winter of 1950 and 1951. The city was blanketed in white by a total snowfall of 82 inches -- almost 7 feet.

But our current winter is approaching that 1950-51 seasonal record at a total of 76.9 inches so far -- and the first day of spring is still three weeks away.

Records show that Pittsburgh averages big snow -- defined as 16 inches or more -- just once every 15 years.
