Saving You Money: Gas-Guzzling Parkway Shortcuts

Thousands of Pittsburghers waste gas while sitting in traffic, especially during rush hour.

Just 10 minutes of idling in traffic can consume one-eighth of a gallon of gas, which comes to about 30 gallons per year.

Here are some tips from Traffic Watch 4's Scott Stiller to save money by avoiding congestion and keeping your car moving in the morning.

Alternative To Parkway West (Interstate 279)
Exit Carnegie
Make a left onto Forsythe Road to Greentree Road
Left on Greentree Road to Potomac Avenue
Right on Potomac Avenue, across Banksville Road to Broadway Avenue
Left on Broadway Avenue, across Wenzell Avenue, through Beechview to Fallowfield Avenue
Left on Fallowfield Avenue to Crane Avenue
Right on Crane Avenue to Route 51
Left on Route 51 to Woodruff Street
Right on Woodruff Street to Wabash Tunnel
Right into Wabash Tunnel
Follow tunnel to Carson Street
Carson Street to Smithfield Street Bridge into Downtown

Alternative To Parkway East (Interstate 376)
Exit at Churchill
Take Old William Penn Highway to Penn Avenue
Follow Penn Avenue to S. Braddock Avenue
Left on S. Braddock Avenue to Forbes Avenue
Right on Forbes Avenue, follow into Squirrel Hill
2 Choices:
Left on Murray Avenue and jump back onto Parkway East
Or, stay on Forbes Avenue into Schenley Park/Oakland

Alternative To Route 51 (Saw Mill Run Blvd.)
Right on Colerain Street and quick left onto Nobles Lane, follow to Brownsville Road
Left on Brownsville Road, follow through Mt. Oliver and across Arlington Avenue to S. 18th Street
Take S. 18th Street into South Side, cross Carson Street to Sidney Street
Left on Sidney Street to 17th Street
Right on 17th Street and quick left onto Muriel Street
Take Muriel Street to the 10th Street Bridge
Right onto the 10th Street Bridge into downtown
