The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation has released a planned list of 2008 construction work on Pittsburgh-area roads, bridges and highways.

One of the biggest projects starts on Jan. 3. The Boulevard of the Allies in Pittsburgh will be shut down in Oakland, as PennDOT destroys the bridge over Forbes Avenue and redesigns traffic flow in the area.

"That will be a dramatic change for folks who drive through Oakland and travel through the city in that direction," said PennDOT District 11 Executive Dan Cessna.

On the Parkway West, a $76 million effort to connect Interstates 79 and 279 will continue -- as will work on the West End.

"New phases of the West End will take place entirely through the summer of 2008, 2009 and 2010," Cessna said.

Outbound construction is scheduled on Route 28 from O'Hara to East Deer. Also, a third outbound lane will be built from Harmar Township to the Pittsburgh Mills mall in Frazer Township.

"We will go to one-lane restriction in the northbound direction sometime in March or April and stay in place for several months throughout the beginning of the season, but not the entire construction season," Cessna said.

And don't forget about the Parkway East (Interstate 376).

"Phase three of the Parkway East will begin in March timeframe and extend the entire way through December -- the part that we left off in Edgewood -- and continue through to Churchill to the Business (Route) 22 interchange," Cessna said.

If you're Kennywood Park-bound, you'll have to deal with reconstruction on the Rankin Bridge for the next two years.

Other projects on the 2008 work schedule include:

  • Greensburg Road, Lower Burrell, bridge replacement, $1.9 million, single-lane closing.
  • Loyalhanna Creek Bridge, replacement just north of the Route 30 exit, to start after May.
  • St. Vincent Drive, Unity, relocation project, final construction phase, $3.5 million, to start after April.
  • Turtle Creek Bridge, replacement, $1 million to $5 million, starts in spring.
  • Mon-Fayette Expressway, Uniontown to Brownsville, new toll highway, $8.1 million, late 2008/early 2009.
  • Route 119, Connellsville, improvements from Highland Avenue to Route 1035, $1 million to $5 million.
