North Shore Connector Work Causing Downtown DetoursPOSTED: 1:08 pm EDT July 2,
2007 PITTSBURGH -- If you plan to head Downtown from now until the end of the year, road closures will likely affect your travel plans. Numerous fences and barricades are in place for the massive amount of construction planned at Stanwix Street and Penn Avenue as part of the Port Authority's North Shore Connector. The massive project will extend the trolley under Stanwix Street and the Allegheny River to the North Shore. The current road closure is only about a block long, but it is challenging and time-consuming for drivers.Stanwix Street is now closed from Penn Avenue to Fort Duquesne Boulevard. The detour will put you in to traffic along Fort Duquesne, Commonwealth Place or Liberty Avenue. The sidewalk will remain open for pedestrians. Businesses, along with the parking garage along Stanwix Street, will also remain open. You have to access the garage by way of Fort Duquesne Boulevard. In the second phase of the project, a second lane of Penn Avenue near Gateway Center will be closed. That closure will make things tricky for Downtown commuters trying to get to the Parkway West, because it only leaves one lane open for travelers near Gateway Center."No one knows you go up to the corner to get in to the parking lot," said Rev. Dr. Harris Stozier, who works along Stanwix Street. "There was no forewarning of how to go or where to go, so it's going to be a problem."Two eastbound lanes along the Fort Duquesne Boulevard are closed between Stanwix and Sixth streets for the next six weeks.Along with the road closures, 23 bus routes have been changed as well. More information on alternative routes is posted at bus stops Downtown. Related Links: More County NewsGet RSS | E-Mail Alerts Copyright 2007 by ThePittsburghChannel. All rights reserved.
