Women's Semis On Tap Thursday At Wimbledon

POSTED: 3:09 pm EDT July 2, 2008

(Sports Network) - The women's semifinals will be staged Thursday at Wimbledon, as the mighty Williams sisters, reigning champion Venus and former titlist Serena, will try to produce an all-sibling final here on Saturday at the All England Club.

Fifth-seeded Russian Elena Dementieva will take on a seventh-seeded Venus, while a sixth-seeded Serena will encounter Chinese wild card Jie Zheng on the hallowed lawns of Centre Court.

Venus is 5-2 lifetime against Dementieva, including a victory in the gold medal match at the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney.

The 26-year-old Dementieva is a two-time major runner-up and will appear in her first-ever Wimbledon semi and her fifth career major semifinal.

The six-time Grand Slam champion Venus will appear in her seventh Wimbledon semifinal in 12 trips to the AEC and is a perfect 6-0 in her previous semis and a brilliant 56-7 overall here.

The 28-year-old former top-ranked Venus defeated France's Marion Bartoli in last year's finale and also titled here in 2000, 2001 and 2005.

The former world No. 1 Serena is 1-0 lifetime against Zheng, blasting her in the opening round here at Wimbledon four years ago.

The 26-year-old Serena is an eight-time Grand Slam champ, including back- to-back Wimbledon titles in 2002 and 2003, beating Venus in a pair of finals. Serena was also the runner-up here in 2004.

Serena is 3-1 in her previous Wimbledon semis.

Zheng, who will turn 25 on Saturday, is the first-ever Chinese, male or female, to reach the final four at a Grand Slam and is also the first wild card to land in the semis at the All England Club.
