Davydenko Advances In Rainy Portschach

POSTED: 3:01 pm EDT May 19, 2008

(Sports Network) - Top-seeded Russian Nikolay Davydenko highlighted Monday's first-round winners at a rainy Hypo Group International tennis event, a final clay-court French Open tuneup.

The world No. 4 Davydenko drubbed Austrian wild card Rainer Eitzinger 6-1, 6-1 at Werzer Tennis Arena. Davydenko captured this event back-to-back in 2005 and 2006.

The only other seeded winner on Monday was No. 6 Italian Andreas Seppi, who overcame Latvian Ernests Gulbis 1-6, 6-4, 6-3 on Day 2.

Rain completely washed away play here on Sunday and prevented three matches from being completed on Monday.

Austrian wild card Oliver Marach was leading fifth-seeded American Sam Querrey 6-3, 3-5 when play was called for the day on Monday, and a match between seventh-seeded Croat Mario Ancic and American Robby Ginepri never got underway.

In other Day-2 action, Austrian crowd favorite Jurgen Melzer, a former finalist here, handled American Donald Young 7-5, 6-2; Spaniard Daniel Gimeno- Traver topped Austrian Werner Eschauer 6-4, 6-2; Spaniard Ivan Navarro beat American Vincent Spadea 6-4, 6-4; and Czech Jiri Vanek bested wild card and former French Open finalist Martin Verkerk of The Netherlands 7-5, 4-6, 6-2.

A bout between Israeli Dudi Sela and German Mischa Zverev was suspended, with Sela leading 6-5 in the first set.

Argentine Juan Monaco defeated Frenchman Gael Monfils in last year's Portschach finale.
