Roddick Withdraws From French Open

POSTED: 12:30 pm EDT May 19, 2008

(Sports Network) - Andy Roddick will not play in the upcoming French Open to rest an ailing back and shoulder.

Roddick's brother, John, made the announcement at the World Team Cup tournament, an event the world's sixth-ranked player was scheduled to play. John Roddick is the USA team captain in the clay court French Open tuneup.

"Andy recently played as well as ever before on clay," John Roddick said during a press conference Monday announcing his brother's withdrawal from the World Team Cup. "But last Friday his back problems resurfaced. After an examination by a specialist in New York he was forced to withdraw. Andy now has to rest for 10 to 12 days and will also have to withdraw from the French Open."

Andy Roddick was hurt earlier this month in the Italian Masters when he was forced to retire in the first set of a semifinal match against Switzerland's Stanislas Wawrinka.

Roddick has never fared well at the French Open, which starts Sunday in Paris. He was a first-round loser each of the past two years and his best finish was a third-round appearance in his first try at Roland Garros in 2001.

The 2003 U.S. Open champ has captured a pair of titles in 2008, winning in San Jose and Dubai.
