Team 4: Rising Parking Costs

POSTED: 5:28 pm EST January 29, 2004

Pittsburgh's parking tax is going up 60 percent next week, but Team 4's Paul Van Osdol reported that some city garages and lots are raising rates by more than 100 percent.

Discussion

The old rate at the Shadyside Garage was 75 cents for 30 minutes, but the rate is increasing 367 percent to $3.50. Monthly leases are going from $100 to $190.

Leases at the Forbes Semple Garage in Oakland used to cost $115, but they will now cost $190.

At the Third Avenue Garage in Downtown, the old lease rate of $200 is going up 25 percent to $250.

Metered lots throughout the city offer 15 minutes of parking for 25 cents. The cost is staying the same, but the time limit is dropping to 7 ½ minutes.

City Controller Tom Flaherty is planning to audit the Parking Authority to see if customers are being gouged.

Meanwhile, the Sports and Exhibition Authority has decided not to raise rates at its North Shore lots and the David L. Lawrence Convention Center garage.
