POSTED: 2:50 pm EDT April 16, 2009

(Sports Network) - The Pittsburgh Steelers re-signed backup quarterback Charlie Batch to a one-year contract Thursday and released backup running back Gary Russell.

The terms for Batch's contract were not released.

Batch missed all of last season with a shoulder injury and has been the primary backup in Pittsburgh since signing as a free agent in 2002. In his time with the Steelers, the Pittsburgh native has played in 22 games -- four starts -- and has a 94.4 passer rating. He spent his first four seasons in the NFL with Detroit, making 46 starts out of 48 games played.

Russell was originally signed by the Steelers as an undrafted rookie free agent in 2007. In his two seasons with Pittsburgh, he appeared in 15 regular- season games and four postseason games. He scored three touchdowns in the 2008 regular season and found the end zone once in Pittsburgh's Super Bowl victory over Arizona in February.
