PITTSBURGH -- Instead of seeking out a scalper for hard-to-get Steelers tickets, the National Football League says it has a better way.Beginning Thursday, the NFL launched a league-wide online ticket exchange program almost identical to the one that the Steelers ran last year.Video:

People who have extra game tickets can use ticketmaster.com or the home team's official Web site to sell them -- and fans who need those tickets can buy them without worrying about fraud."They know that these are the real thing, and they're going to have comfort knowing that once they get up to the gate, they're going to get in and have their seats," Steelers communications director Dave Lockett said.On the financial downside, there is a $2 fee per ticket bought. And, by law, street scalpers in Pennsylvania can only charge 25 percent more than the face value of a ticket. But there is no such restriction online, which is why some seats to regular-season Steelers games are selling for more than $500 apiece through the Steelers Ticket Exchange. For more information, visit Steelers.com.If you're one of those people who likes to take a chance and buy tickets on the street, the general rule of thumb is that the farther you get from the stadium, the riskier the purchase becomes.
