PITTSBURGH -- The Pittsburgh Steelers just finished interviewing Minnesota Vikings defensive coordinator Mike Tomlin, the fourth and final publicly announced candidate for their head coaching vacancy.

Over the past few days, Chicago Bears defensive coordinator Ron Rivera and in-house candidates Russ Grimm and Ken Whisenhunt have also interviewed for the job.
Many Steelers fans have no idea who Tomlin is -- but the city didn't really know much about former coach Bill Cowher before he was hired in 1992, either.Tomlin is a young, defensive mind, and throughout his career, his units have twice led the league and helped Tampa Bay win a Super Bowl title. He's the same age as Cowher was when he interviewed with the Steelers, and, like Cowher, has helped create some of the league's most stifling defenses. This is the first time the Steelers have had to apply the NFL's "Rooney Rule," which requires teams to give minority candidates an equal shot at openings for top jobs. The rule is named after Steelers Chairman Dan Rooney, who heads the NFL's diversity committee.
