Pirates Revise Schedule, Add Security
Final Week Set For Oct. 1-7
POSTED: 9:43 p.m. EDT September 13, 2001
Several changes have been made to the remainder of the Pirates' 2001 schedule. Click here for the new September and October schedules.
The New York Mets shifted a three-game series with the Pirates to Pittsburgh so rescue workers and victims could have more time to deal with the attack on the World Trade Center. The games had been scheduled for Monday-Wednesday at Shea Stadium, but they were moved to PNC Park and set for Monday and Tuesday at 7:05 p.m. and Wednesday at 1:35 p.m.
During the series, a large "God Bless America" banner will be available for people to sign outside PNC Park. After the series, the banner will be sent to New York for the Mets and their fans to see.
A series between the teams that had been scheduled for Sept. 11-13 in Pittsburgh is expected to be made up the week of Oct. 1 in New York. Baseball decided to extend its season one week to make up the lost games.
"The only right thing to do is switch series with the Pirates out of respect for the victims of the tragedy in New York and out of respect for the focus of the rescue workers," Mets general
manager Steve Phillips said. "We want to let the focus remain on what is going on with the rescue and recovery effort in the city."
"We agreed with the Mets that playing at PNC Park was the best thing to do," Pirates owner Kevin McClatchy said. "While we look forward to resuming the season, our thoughts and prayers will remain with all those affected by these horrific events."
Anyone holding tickets for the Sept. 11 game can use them on Sept. 17. Tickets from Sept. 12 can be used on Sept. 18, and tickets from Sept. 13 can be used on Sept. 19.
Tickets from canceled games can also be exchanged for any other home game this season, or some 2002 home games in April and May.
Security
The Pirates have instituted additional safety measures at PNC Park:
Fans still may bring bottled water and approved food items, but no backpacks, coolers, containers or other packages will be allowed into the park. Handbags and diaper bags are permitted.
Curbside parking will only be allowed for vehicles that are dropping off or picking up disabled guests. Other vehicles will not be permitted to park curbside, nor will they be allowed to stand or wait.
Fans will not be able to obtain pass-out or re-entry slips.
