Pirate Ship Approved For PNC ParkColors Will Be Toned DownUPDATED: 5:30 p.m. EDT September 5, 2000 The "pirate ship" outside PNC Park is
one step closer to being reality. The city planning commission on Tuesday gave conceptual approval to the Pirates' revised plan for the 70-foot-long children's entertainment center that will go along with its new stadium next season. The original plan called for the ship to be bright red. That has been changed to more earthy colors. The ship will be located beyond the right field grandstand and will have batting cages, pitching areas in the hull and climbing ropes on the decks. "It's going to be part of the baseball game-day experience," Pirates vice president Steve Greenberg said. "We're getting e-mails daily about the ship. And that's the key." The ship is expected to cost $2 million, with the money coming from private donations. The Sports and Exhibition Authority approved the project on Aug. 28.
