Like many, I am a man who has walked a wandering religious path.

Sometimes devout, other times disbelieving. My faith in all things great and small, religious or otherwise seems constantly under attack. I waiver, wander, sometimes come back to my roots and other times start fresh.

Most people, if they are honest with themselves, will admit much the same. The world's distractions, temptations and stresses assault our senses and sensibilities in an almost non-stop rush.

Such has always been our lot in life though. Throughout the ages, battles of the heart, the mind, the flesh and the soul and of good and evil have been waged, sometimes in epic proportions.

Think of that landscape and then look at a man like Karol Wojtyla. He was one of us afterall. Built and wired much the same as you and I. And somehow, from an early age and stretching throughout his life here on earth, he remained consistent in his beliefs and actions.

Much will be made of this man over the next few days. His story will be told countless times. We'll hear of his courage as he survived the evil Nazi death machine, how he stood up to communism and used his voice to call for men and governments to treat each other with respect and dignity and compassion.

Regardless of our religious faith or lack thereof, Karol Wojtyla was one for the ages. Someone who was true to himself and his beliefs, and used his place in this world to convince others to view themselves, their actions and their beliefs with a simple vision.

Goodness, fairness, integrity, honesty are all nice words. Nice words that are sometimes difficult to define in the actions of our daily lives. But if we could define ourselves with those words, wouldn't we?

We could. It is our choice.
