My View: Something To Chew On

Who knew that I'd have the need, the request and the desire to update a column that is essentially a recipe? But here I am, with all those things in hand just 24 hours after initially posting.

You may remember the original recipe column began with Breaking News. And so, it seems only fair this column at least include some. But, in breaking (no pun intended) from traditional news etiquette, I will not include it at the start of the article.

Lets first begin with a refresher. There is a "new" food out there.

That's right. I had something Friday night that not only had I never eaten before, I didn't even know it existed.

How...in a world devoid of new territory, new species, new feats of exploration and sadly, new jokes---was I able to find something new to eat? Who knows? And more importantly, who cares? My neighbors Liz and Jake simply said, "try this" and I did.

Now, you may be thinking that this is no topic for a TV News Director to be writing about in a column like this (even my wife questioned it)but trust me, if you go out on a limb and give this a try, you'll never doubt me again. In fact, I think I'll be hard-pressed to repeat the magic.

Now, first things first---as far as I know, this is so new, there isn't even a name for this treat yet.

Which means it is time for .....Breaking News!

I'm christening it "Jake Flakes" in honor of my neighbor. Second, it makes use of Corn Flakes, but I'm not even sure the Corn Flakes people know about it yet. Heck, if they did they'd have put the recipe on the side of their cereal boxes and I'd be writing about something else here. (Breaking News has been inserrted here because originally, these snacks were christened "The Jakester." However, after having input from concerned family and friends that the name sounded a bit too "90's" I decided to use my editorial control, accept my failure as a painful learning experience, suck it up and go with the name change.)

That's how cutting edge this is. The snack, the column and you! We're all out there together, hand in hand out on the front line of societal change.

Thank me later, but remember it is a big responsibility to shoulder. Good luck.

Now, what kind of food am I talking about? Well, it isn't haute cuisine. It's more like Rice Crispy Treats and who doesn't like those? It's chewy, tasty and easy to make. I guarantee Jake Flakes will deliver on all three of those promises too. It's chewy, tasty and easy. So, here you go:

Mix:
  • 1 cup sugar & 1 cup Karo liquid cord syrup
  • Bring to a boil for 30 seconds
  • Remove from heat
  • Add one-and-a-half cups of peanut butter
  • Add to 6 cups of corn flakes
  • Put it in brownie pans and spread it or roll into balls depending on how quickly you want to eat it.
  • There you have it. Jake Flakes. A lot of blabbing but the ending is worth every mouthful. This is the perfect summer snack. Naturally, if you're allergic to any of the above ingredients, don't go near it. Otherwise, indulge.
