The gunfire started on 19th Street and ended on Smallman Street, in the heart of the nightclub district.

strip district shooting Police said that Michael Platt of Friendship fired shots from a car while Eric Gooden, 27, of the East End drove. Platt shot and killed a pedestrian, whose name has not been released.

Platt then shot at two off-duty police officers in uniform outside Banana Joe's nightclub. Platt was killed when the officers returned fire.

"It seemed like they were just driving around, wreaking havoc around the time the bar was closing," Pittsburgh Police spokeswoman Michelle Papakie said. "It was a dangerous situation. There were crowds and crowds of people, and (the officers) tried to contain the situation without using excessive force, but they had to."
