Job Summary: Does covering breaking news get your adrenaline pumping? Do you love working in a fast-paced newsroom environment? Are you a great TV or print writer but want to take the next step into the digital media world? We can offer the best of both. This is a hands-on position, gathering and writing news stories, images and video and publishing. A major focus of the position is on delivering breaking news quickly, accurately and in a compelling manner with text, video and photos and other Web-based technology. This job requires a thorough understanding of how to promote interactivity and engagement with a Web audience. The position also requires the ability to stay on top of all the latest Web-based technology available and how it can enhance the audience’s experience with the site.

Essential Job Functions: Writes and edits materials for target audiences integrating compelling and creative text, still images, audio- and video-file components, and links to relevant Internet resources into an appealing and thoughtful online package. Updates the Web site throughout the day, coordinating with station news department and online staff for the latest news and features. Produces pod casts, coordinating with the Web department. Creates and helps maintain special sections of the Web site as assigned, including, but not limited to, news, sports, health, community, environment and politics. Oversees special Web projects developed by the staff by using latest technology available. Streams live video events and other major station initiatives. Ensures accuracy of stories by double-checking any necessary facts in assigned projects. Possesses online savvy to provide added value to reports initially developed by broadcast staff. Replies to user e-mail and/or routes appropriately. Maintains open communications with TV station staff and fosters a collaborative environment to benefit both the online and on-air. Drives Web users to watch the station, including: creation of online tie-ins, co-sponsorship opportunities, and topical promotion.

Qualifications & Competencies: A bachelor degree in communications, journalism or web writing preferred. Experience in news organization a plus. Knowledge of Associated Press-style writing required. Must have the ability to multitask in a deadline-driven environment. Needs to be a self-starter, self-motivated but also have the ability to take direction. Editor should be familiar with television lingo, television writing and television software (such as I-News), but be able to rework the material into AP print-style copy. Editor should be familiar with image-editing software such as Adobe. Photoshop or Elements and comfortable using a Web content management system. Should be competent with HTML code. Knowledge of latest Web development tools and languages a plus.
