Race For The Cure

UPDATED: 10:25 am EST February 22, 2006

The 14th annual Komen Pittsburgh Race For The Cure will be run on Mother's Day, May 14, at Schenley Park.

The mission of eradicating breast cancer through education, screening, research and treatment is the focus of the annual race and walk.

More than 30,000 people are expected to participate this year. Proceeds benefit the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation.

WTAE-TV Channel 4 has been the media sponsor of the event since its inception in 1993, with extensive promotional campaigns that raise awareness of breast cancer through locally produced public service announcements.

The 5-kilometer (3.1 miles) run/walk and one-mile fast walk has raised $12 million to date in the Pittsburgh market to support national breast cancer research.

Of the money raised, 75 percent remains in the local market to provide mammograms and follow-up diagnostic services to medically under-served women through the Mammogram Voucher Program (MVP).
