Police said two of Pittsburgh Steelers linebacker Joey Porter's pit bulls escaped from his Pine Township home and mauled another animal to death on Tuesday.

Northern Regional Police Chief Bob Amman said the two dogs escaped from Porter's property and ran to a nearby farm, where miniature horses were grazing in the field.

Police said the pit bulls went into the field and attacked the 29-inch high miniature horse, killing it.

Amman said responding officers found Porter at his home, where he assisted in bringing the dogs under control.

The pit bulls are being housed Wednesday night at Triangle Pet Control in McKees Rocks.

Amman said his officers intend to file charges against Porter for harboring unsafe dogs and failing to confine his dogs.

Those charges would be summary offenses, considered minor charges.

Amman said Porter was very cooperative with police and expressed personal remorse to the owner of the miniature horse.

Porter declined to comment on the matter.
