Agassi Pulls Out Of Australian Open

POSTED: 3:51 am EST January 5, 2006

Andre Agassi withdrew from the Australian Open, citing a left ankle injury.

The 35-year-old Agassi is a four-time winner of the Open (1995, 2000, 2001, 2003). He lost to Roger Federer in the quarterfinals at the event last year and to him also in the title match at the 2005 U.S. Open.

With 60 career singles titles, Agassi had been hoping to a strong start to the 2006 season after winning just one tournament in 2005. He first sprained the ankle while playing racquetball in October and then compounded the problem during the season-ending Tennis Masters Cup in Shanghai in November.
