Who's The Best Athlete In Western Pennsylvania?

UPDATED: 5:08 pm EST April 2, 2005

Who is the best all-time athlete in Western Pennsylvania history?

Earlier this week, we asked Channel 4 Action News viewers to e-mail their suggestions to thepittsburghchannel.com.

He or she can be a current or former player, in any sport, at any level -- high school, college or professional. Basically, anyone who has ever passed through the region.

Based on your responses and input from the sports staff here at the station, we came up with a final list of nine athletes and asked you to vote for your favorite in our online poll.

Nearly 2,200 votes were cast. The results are as follows:

1. Mario Lemieux, hockey, 20 percent of the vote: two Stanley Cups (Pittsburgh Penguins), gold medal (2002 Olympics), three-time NHL MVP, Hockey Hall of Fame

2. Kurt Angle, wrestling, 16 percent: state title (Mount Lebanon High), national title (Clarion), gold medal (1996 Olympics)

3. Roberto Clemente, baseball, 15 percent: 3,000 hits, 1971 World Series (Pittsburgh Pirates)

4. Joe Montana, football, 13 percent: national title (Notre Dame), four Super Bowls (San Francisco 49ers), three-time Super Bowl MVP, two-time NFL MVP, Pro Football Hall of Fame, football and basketball standout (Ringgold High)

5. Terry Bradshaw, football, 11 percent: four Super Bowls (Pittsburgh Steelers), two-time Super Bowl MVP, Pro Football Hall of Fame

5. Dan Marino, football, 11 percent: All-American (Pitt), NFL career leader in touchdowns (420) and yards (61,361), nine Pro Bowls, 1984 MVP (Miami Dolphins), football and baseball standout (Central Catholic High)

7. Arnold Palmer, golf, 8 percent: four-time Masters winner, two-time British Open winner, U.S. Open title

8. Swin Cash, basketball, 3 percent: WPIAL and state title (McKeesport High), two national titles (Connecticut), gold medal (2004 Olympics), WNBA title (Detroit Shock)

There were many more suggestions that didn't make the final cut. Thanks for all the feedback!
