UPDATED: 2:31 p.m. EST January 7, 2001
Friends and family gathered Saturday afternoon to say goodbye to a Pittsburgh sports icon.
The funeral of longtime Steelers, West Virginia University football and WTAE broadcaster Jack Fleming was held Saturday at Mount Lebanon United Methodist Church. Fleming, 77, died Wednesday at his Pittsburgh home.
Former Steelers head coach Chuck Noll, who guided the team in many of the games that Fleming called, attended the funeral.
Fleming was remembered in speeches by family members and friends on Saturday, including longtime broadcast partner Myron Cope.
"I marvel at how Jack could engage total strangers in conversations that would last 30 minutes," Cope said.
"He was a people guy."
Fleming was buried in Kingwood, W.Va.
A memorial service will be held Sunday at 2 p.m. in Morgantown, W.Va., where Fleming attended high school. The service will be broadcast live from a chapel on the WVU campus by WVAQ-FM (101.9) and WCHS-AM (580), and then replayed by WAJR-AM (1440) at 8 p.m.
