Buckeyes Wideout Pleads Innocent

POSTED: 8:37 pm EST January 8, 2004

Ohio State wide receiver Santonio Holmes entered a plea of innocent Thursday to charges of disorderly conduct during a fight in November.

Kick returner Troy Smith, the other Buckeye supposedly involved in the incident, will appear in court in February. Smith also was charged with disorderly conduct.

The fight occurred in the early morning hours of November 16 near a dormitory on the campus of Ohio State. According to a report by university police, five women were also charged with disorderly conduct.

The report stated that four female students were assaulted and a window of one woman's car was broken. The women had minor injuries, the report said.

Holmes, a freshman who broke in to the starting lineup midway through the season, did not start in Ohio State's 35-21 loss to Michigan on November 22, but caught a pair of touchdown passes in the contest. The loss to the arch- rival Wolverines cost Ohio State the Big Ten title.

For the season, Holmes totaled 32 receptions for 549 yards to go along with seven touchdowns.
