POSTED: 10:34 pm EST November 24, 2003

Drew Schifino poured in a game-high 27 points as the West Virginia Mountaineers defeated the James Madison Dukes, 74-57, at the Convocation Center.

D'or Fischer netted 14 points and blocked a school record eight shots. Patrick Beilein and Tyler Relph each added 10 points for the Mountaineers (1-0).

The Dukes (1-1) were led by Dwayne Broyles who tallied 20 points with nine rebounds, while Chris Cathlin pulled down a game-high 12 rebounds but shot only 3-of-11 from the floor.

West Virginia jumped out to a 23-8 lead midway through the first half and cruised to a 40-22 advantage at the intermission thanks to a defense that limited JMU to 27.8 percent shooting from the field and 0-of-6 from behind the three-point line in the period.

James Madison outscored the Mountaineers 35-34 in the second half, but it was too little too late as West Virginia took the 17-point win.

WVU shot 48.1 percent from the field in the contest while the Dukes shot just 31.9 percent.

James Madison did win the battle of the boards, 47-38, with 20 of those coming at the offensive end.
