The Penguins' locker room is defending team captain Sidney Crosby from unattributed criticism of his decision not to go on "The Late Show With David Letterman."

"I read what they wrote about him and I think that's (expletive)," teammate Max Talbot said Wednesday.

"I think before anybody should weigh criticism, I'd ask them to walk a week in his shoes and see how many times they say 'yes' and they say 'no' to what he does," head coach Dan Bylsma said.

According to New York Post hockey columnist Larry Brooks, some in the NHL "are miffed" because Crosby declined an offer to do Letterman's nightly Top 10 list. The Pens were in town to play the Rangers at the time.

"Everyone's not always going to be happy and everyone's not going to be pleased, but I do my best and I do what I think is right and I'll continue to do that. But there's really nothing I can do if people disagree with that," Crosby said about declining Letterman's invite.

A very brief write-up in Brooks' Sunday column made non-specific references to "league personnel" and "folks around the NHL" and did not include any direct quotes.

It was headlined "Crosby blows NHL's golden chance" -- referring to the potential for the league to market itself after a huge audience watched Canada beat the U.S. in the Olympics last month.

The column also said Brooks "was told" -- but didn't say by whom -- that this isn't Crosby's first time turning down a "Late Show" request. He also declined to appear on "Today" after the Pens won the Stanley Cup last year, Brooks wrote.

"I do my best, you know, that's all I can do. It's not the first year I've dealt with balancing everything. I've had that responsibility for a long time and I think anybody who knows me well knows I take that seriously," Crosby said referring to the demands on his time for personal appearances outside hockey

The Pens will be in the New York area on March 12 and 17 to play the New Jersey Devils, but Crosby said he hasn't been asked to appear on Letterman's show.
