PITTSBURGH -- Former Pirates star Freddy Sanchez may have moved to San Francisco, but his heart remains in Pittsburgh. The second baseman was in Churchill on Saturday night to receive the Don Bosco Humanitarian Award for his work with children. Sanchez was joined by his wife, Alyssa, at the Churchill Valley Country Club for the award, given by the organization, Abode for Children.Sanchez was born with a club foot that required years of physical therapy. While in Pittsburgh, Sanchez started the Pirates Charities Miracle League Field in Cranberry Township, a unique field where children with special needs can play baseball."If I can touch one person and have even one kid think, 'If Freddy can do it, I can do it,' then that's all I ask for, that those kids never give up and they go out there and enjoy the game," Sanchez said.WTAE Channel 4 Action News anchor Mike Clark emceed the banquet.
