Pens Lose Another Defenseman; Talbot's Return Nears

Jay McKee Out With Finger Infection

It wasn't long ago that the Pittsburgh Penguins were raising the Stanley Cup to Queen's "We Are the Champions," but with their injury report beginning to rival that of their actual depth chart, it seems their theme song should be "Another One Bites the Dust."

On Wednesday, defenseman Jay McKee became the latest victim.

McKee will miss two-to-four weeks with a finger infection, becoming the fifth Penguin defenseman to miss significant time this season.

Max Talbot

McKee joins fellow defensemen Sergei Gonchar (wrist), Alex Goligoski (lower body), Kris Letang (shoulder) and Brooks Orpik (undisclosed), along with forwards Max Talbot (shoulder), Chris Kunitz (undisclosed) and Tyler Kennedy (groin) on the Pens' injury report.

Conn Smythe Trophy winner Evgeni Malkin was also on the list before returning to action against Boston on Saturday.

Mark Eaton remains the lone member of the Pens' top-six defensemen not to be bitten by the injury bug this season.

Despite the ever-growing list of injuries, the Pens could be in line for a shot in the arm.

Orpik and Gonchar were cleared for contact and practiced Wednesday.

Kris Letang

According to WTAE's news-exchange partners at the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review, Talbot will return to the lineup Thursday night against Ottawa, while head coach Dan Bylsma says he hopes Gonchar or Orpik will be able to fill McKee's spot.

Letang also skated with the team on Wednesday, but was wearing a red no-contact sweater.
