Jeff Reed Turns Down Steelers' OfferSteelers Kicker Eligible For Free Agency After 2009 SeasonPOSTED: 3:27 pm EDT September 9,
2009 PITTSBURGH -- While many of the Steelers' potential free agents have reached new deals to remain with the team after 2009, the fate of kicker Jeff Reed will likely be decided after the season.Reed said he declined the team’s most recent offer, but remains on good terms with the organization."I'll never be a guy to hold out, never be a guy to say what people offer and what I turn down, but there was a contract offer two days ago and I turned it down. That’s pretty much all," said Reed. The Steelers have a policy of not negotiating contracts once the season begins, meaning Reed's future with the team won't likely be decided until the offseason. On Tuesday, center Justin Hartwig agreed to a new four-year deal with the team.Hartwig joined Defensive Player of the Year James Harrison, wide receiver Hines Ward, tight end Heath Miller, defensive end Brett Keisel and several others to ink new contracts with the Steelers in the offseason.Reed, running back Willie Parker, offensive tackle Willie Colon, nose tackle Casey Hampton and safety Ryan Clark are among the top Steelers eligible for free agency after the season.Reed joined the Steelers as a free agent in 2002 has made 82.7 percent of his field goal attempts (162 of 196). He is second in scoring in team history with 733 points.
