PITTSBURGH -- It seems celebrity impersonators aren't content to just try to make use of Pittsburgh Penguins captain Sidney Crosby's name.
It also appears Pens MVP Evgeni Malkin had his name lent to an unsanctioned Web page soliciting money.
WTAE's news exchange partners at the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review reported that someone used Crosby's name on a MySpace page, soliciting apparently bogus donations for a Minnesota park.
But neither Crosby nor park officials knew anything about the campaign.
"That is not Sidney Crosby," Penguins spokesman Tom McMillan said. "He does not have a MySpace page."
It wasn't until an Indiana County woman became suspicious of the page and alerted authorities and some of Crosby's representatives that the fake page came to light.
A message sent Monday from the MySpace page "If You See Crosby," asked for help to raise $3,000 for Phelps Park in Minneapolis. Run by Stephanie Biddlecom, a 23-year old small-time female professional wrestler, the page said that in exchange for a donation, "Sid" promised to send a "game-played, autographed stick," the Trib reported.
That Web page has since been taken down.
But on Wednesday, another fundraising plea from "Geno Mano Mev 86" showed up on MySpace, the Trib reported.
As with the Crosby page, Penguins spokesman McMillan said the Russian center has nothing to do with the posting.
