BoSox Place Bailey On DL; Recall INF Bates

POSTED: 10:43 pm EDT July 6, 2009

(Sports Network) - The Boston Red Sox placed infielder Jeff Bailey on the 15-day disabled list and recalled infielder Aaron Bates from Triple-A Pawtucket on Monday.

Bailey was just brought up from Pawtucket on June 30 after Sox third baseman Mike Lowell hit the DL. However, he suffered a high ankle sprain in a July 4 loss to Seattle.

The 30-year-old Bailey is batting .208 with three home runs and nine RBI in 26 games for Boston this season. Bates made his major league-debut in the A's 6-0 victory and went 0-for-3 with a pair of strikeouts.

To make room for Bates on the 40-man roster, Boston transferred infielder Jed Lowrie to the 60-day disabled list. Lowrie continues to rehab at Pawtucket while recovering from surgery on his left wrist back in April.
