PITTSBURGH -- Max Talbot, who netted the Penguins' two goals in their 2-1 Game 7 victory in the Stanley Cup finals, had successful shoulder surgery on Tuesday and is expected to miss the start of the upcoming season.
Talbot, 25, underwent an operation to repair a torn labrum in his left shoulder.
His recovery is expected to take four to five months, meaning the Pens will be without their Game 7 hero when they begin their Stanley Cup defense.
"Max has played with this problem for quite a while and we all agreed it was best for him to have the surgery at his time," said Pens general manager Ray Shero. "Although he will miss training camp and the start of the season, the doctors expect him to make a complete recovery."
Talbot's two second-period goals lifted the Pens over the Detroit Red Wings in the Stanley Cup finals, bringing the franchise its third championship.
He recorded 12 goals and 10 assists in 75 regular season games and added another 13 points in 24 playoff games.
Talbot was selected by the Pens in the eighth round of the 2002 NHL draft.
