Pittsburgh Steelers receiver and Super Bowl XLIII MVP Santonio Holmes was formally arraigned Wednesday on a misdemeanor marijuana charge stemming from a traffic stop.

Holmes was not required to appear at Wednesday's hearing. He was represented by attorney Robert DelGreco Jr., who is going to challenge the constitutionality of the stop in which Pittsburgh police said they found three marijuana-filled cigars in Holmes' car.

"I will be filing a suppression motion," DelGreco said. "That will be a public record and we'll go from there."

Police said Holmes cooperated and pointed out the drugs to officers after they pulled his vehicle over near Mellon Arena on Oct. 23.

The stiffest penalty Holmes could face is 30 days of probation and a $500 fine if convicted of the charge, which DelGreco has called "as low-grade a misdemeanor as you can get."

A pretrial conference in the case is scheduled for May 22.
