Nebraska's Pelini Gets Extension Through 2014

POSTED: 8:09 pm EDT March 30, 2009

(Sports Network) - Nebraska head football coach Bo Pelini has signed a contract extension through the 2014 season, the school announced Monday.

Pelini, who guided the Cornhuskers to a 9-4 mark in 2008, his first year with the school, will make $1.851 million annually. The deal will make him the sixth-highest paid head coach in the Big 12 Conference.

His original contract, which he signed after being hired on December 2, 2007, was for five years and was worth $1.1 million a season.

"When you compare Bo's performance and experience with other coaches, he was certainly deserving of a significant salary increase," said Nebraska athletic director Tom Osborne. "We made significant progress in one year under Bo's leadership and we are confident he has our program moving in the right direction."

Pelini, who is the 28th head coach in Huskers football history and just the fifth since 1962, became only the fourth Nebraska coach to win nine games in his first season, joining Osborne, Bob Devaney and Frank Solich. His team won six of the final seven games of the season, including a 26-21 win over Clemson in the Gator Bowl.

"I am very appreciative of the commitment Coach Osborne and our administration have made to our football program and our coaching staff," said Pelini. "Working for Coach Osborne is a great situation, and as I said when I was hired, it is an honor to be here at Nebraska as the head coach. I hope to be in this position for a long time and help get this program back to the top of college football."

In 2008, Nebraska was the nation's most improved unit in rushing defense and sacks, while ranking as the fourth-most improved team in overall total defense.
