Yes We Can! Steelers Come Back, Win Super Bowl XLIII

Steelers Capture League-Best Sixth Lombardi Trophy

In the weeks leading up to Super Bowl XLIII, Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin confessed he doesn't wear the Super Bowl ring he won as an assistant coach with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, that it would be something he would leave to his kids.

Well, the Tomlin bunch has another family heirloom to divide amongst themselves, after the Steelers came from behind for a thrilling 27-23 victory over the Arizona Cardinals in Super Bowl XLIII.

Pittsburgh is the first team in NFL history to win a sixth Lombardi Trophy, surpassing the Dallas Cowboys and San Francisco 49ers, each with five.

Santonio Holmes' tiptoe catch at the edge of the end zone with 35 seconds left stood up to an official replay review, and the Steelers' defense was able to hold off a last-second rally attempt by quarterback Kurt Warner and the high-powered Cardinals offense.

Holmes had nine catches for 131 yards and the game-winning touchdown, earning the MVP award and a trip to Disney World.

"Great players step up in big-time games to make plays," Holmes said. "I kind of lost a little composure, you know, but I knew our defense would give us a chance to make it back."

While it's customary for the Super Bowl MVP to head to Disney World for a celebratory parade the day after the NFL championship game, both Holmes and Ben Roethlisberger were invited after the Steelers' victory.

The players filmed their "I'm going to Disney World" commercial on the field following the game and will head to Disney, about 80 miles east of Raymond James Stadium, on Monday morning.

Roethlisberger, who wears No. 7 in honor of Denver Broncos Hall of Fame quarterback John Elway, looked a lot like his childhood idol while engineering an eight play, 78-yard drive that ended with a 6-yard touchdown pass to Holmes to win the game.

"I said it's now or never, I told the guys all the film study you put in doesn't matter unless you do it now," Roethlisberger said. "I'm really proud of the way they responded."

As remarkable as that final scoring drive by quarterback Roethlisberger was, the game will also be remembered for linebacker James Harrison's incredible interception return as time expired in the first half.

Harrison, the NFL's Defensive Player of the Year, picked off Kurt Warner's pass in the end zone and rumbled 100 yards the other way for a touchdown. That play -- the longest in Super Bowl history -- put the Steelers ahead 17-7 at halftime.

Harrison ran past or through most of the Cardinals, nearly stepped out of bounds at one point, and was dragged down by Fitzgerald as he fell to the goal line. The play was reviewed as several Cardinals knelt on one knee, exhausted from the chase and disheartened by the result.

"I didn't see him around my offensive line," Warner said. "He made a great play and a great run to get them a touchdown."

The previous longest play was Desmond Howard's 99-yard kickoff return for Green Bay in 1997.

Tomlin, at age 36, is the youngest head coach to win a Super Bowl.

It was the first postseason meeting between the Cardinals and Steelers. The two teams last met in 2007, with the Cardinals defeating the Steelers 21-14 at University of Phoenix Stadium.

But on the grandest stage sports has to offer, the Steelers evened the score, albeit at the expense of several former coaches and players, including Arizona head coach Ken Whisenhunt, the offensive coordinator for the Steelers’ Super Bowl XL team.

"I'm disappointed for our team. This is a group of men that I'm very proud of. They played very hard in circumstances where nobody believed in them,” said Whisenhunt. "We learned a lot about our team, it's just unfortunate it had to come out that way."
