'Cage The Cards': Steelers Fans Rally Downtown For Super Bowl

Onorato Promises 'Proper' Celebration If Steelers Win

UPDATED: 6:39 pm EST January 29, 2009

The Steelers are going to the Super Bowl again, which means it's time for another downtown rally -- and this one was even bigger than the "Roast the Ravens" event for the AFC Championship game.

Steelers Fans Rally Downtown For Super Bowl

Live music by Kardaz, David Queen and the Jimmy Adler Band highlighted a "Cage the Cards" rally at noon Thursday, three days before the Steelers face the Arizona Cardinals in Super Bowl XLIII.

Also performing were cheerleaders from Brashear, Montour, Riverview and Thomas Jefferson high schools, along with Thomas Jefferson's marching band.

"I had to come, I had to support the team and be with all the fans," said fan Nancy Haft.

"Gotta root on our Steelers. C'mon now, I mean you know now let's go all they way here! Spell out 'Go Steelers!" said Colleen Lebak, another rally attendee.

Painted nails, painted faces, Steelers sunglasses and even a black and gold Mohawk adorned the crowd.

"This is the style!" Randy told Channel 4 Action News, explaining the Mohawk was inspired by kicker Jeff Reed.

Forbes Avenue was closed between Ross and Grant streets to create a makeshift plaza where fans could rally in their black and gold gear.

Free wings, ice cream, milk, milkshakes, smiley-face cookies, coffee and cocoa were available at the rally.

Some people also brought canned goods, non-perishable food items or cash donations for the Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank.

The week leading up to the game is being dubbed "Steelers Victory Week" by Mayor Luke Ravenstahl and Allegheny County Chief Executive Dan Onorato. Both are encouraging Steelers fans to wear black and gold attire all week.

Channel 4 Action News' Ari Hait reported that Onorato addressed rumors that if the Steelers win there won't be a parade. Hait reported Onorato said those rumors are not true.

"There will be a proper celebration downtown, next week, to celebrate the Steelers' six-pack," Onorato said.

Toward the end of the rally fans could pay $1 for an egg to throw at a person dressed as a cardinal. The proceeds from the egg toss went to the food bank.

The Steelers will play the Cardinals on Sunday night at Raymond James Stadium in Tampa, Fla.
