Big East Conference News And Notes

POSTED: 10:39 am EST November 17, 2008

(Sports Network) - CINCINNATI: On Friday, Cincinnati showed a great deal of toughness in a 28-20 road victory over Louisville. John Goebel rushed for 77 yards on 10 carries and scored a touchdown late in the fourth quarter that helped seal the triumph. Tony Pike finished 19-of-33 for 250 yards, two touchdowns and an interception, while Dominick Goodman had nine receptions for 134 yards and a score. Mardy Gilyard also hauled in a TD catch, part of a five-receptions, 73- yard performance for the Bearcats (8-2, 4-1 Big East), who were coming off arguably their biggest win of the year as they knocked off then 20th-ranked West Virginia (26-23) in overtime last weekend after taking out previously 24th-ranked South Florida a week prior. Cincinnati, which now controls its own destiny in the race for the Big East title, will host Pittsburgh next weekend in a game that may very well determine the conference champion.

CONNECTICUT: Syracuse was no match for the Huskies on Saturday, as UConn rolled to a 39-14 victory. Donald Brown was impressive once again for the Huskies, as the star tailback rushed for 131 yards and a touchdown. Jordan Todman added 78 yards and a touchdown on six carries for UConn (7-3, 3-2 in conference), which posted 259 yards on the ground as a team. The Huskies' defense was stout in this one, as the unit recorded five sacks and forced three turnovers, while also holding Syracuse to just 147 total yards. While UConn trails three teams in the race for the Big East title, the program still figures to earn a solid bowl bid with its seven victories. The Huskies will take on South Florida in Tampa on Sunday.

LOUISVILLE: The Cardinals put forth a solid effort against Cincinnati at home last Friday, but the result of that tilt was a heart-breaking 28-20 defeat. Hunter Cantwell completed 19-of-35 passes for 204 yards with a score and a pick, while Victor Anderson gained 60 yards rushing on 13 carries and scored for the Cardinals (5-5, 1-4), who have dropped three straight decisions. They are coming off ugly losses to both Pittsburgh last weekend and Syracuse the week prior. Doug Beaumont led the Cardinals' receiving corps with four receptions for 61 yards. Despite the loss, Louisville won the time of possession battle by more than eight minutes. The Cardinals had won the last five meetings with Cincinnati dating back to 2002. On Saturday, Louisville will play host to West Virginia.

PITTSBURGH: Pitt was idle last weekend and has been preparing for an important meeting with Cincinnati this Saturday. The Panthers put forth arguably their best effort of the season two weeks ago in their most recent outing, as they crushed Louisville by a 41-7 final. The Cardinals had won the last seven games in the series, making the blowout all the more improbable. Bill Stull threw for 216 yards and a touchdown, as the Pitt quarterback completed 15-of-27 passes. Jonathan Baldwin led the balanced passing attack with 80 yards on two catches. LeSean McCoy struggled for most of the game, managing just 39 yards on 17 carries with a score.

RUTGERS: The Scarlet Knights forced a season-high six turnovers en route to an impressive 49-16 road victory over South Florida. That 33-point win marked the largest margin of victory for the program in a Big East road game. Rutgers finished the contest with 421 total yards and scored six offensive touchdowns, with three on the ground and three through the air. Mike Teel overshadowed a pair of interceptions with his three passing scores and 294 yards. Tailback Joe Martinek ran for a pair of touchdowns. Kenny Britt was outstanding at receiver, as he made eight catches for 173 yards and one score. The Scarlet Knights will take a break from league play to battle Army on Sunday.

SOUTH FLORIDA: The Bulls were embarrassed at home on Saturday, as they fell to Rutgers by a 49-16 final. Six turnovers killed USF, which fell to 1-4 in league play, overshadowing a 5-0 conference record. Matt Grothe struggled under center, as his 292 passing yards and one touchdown were overshadowed by three interceptions. Jessie Hester did catch 10 passes for 110 yards, but those numbers didn't mean a great deal by game's end. George Selvie, the feared pass rusher for the Bulls, was held in check. On Sunday, USF will take on Connecticut in Tampa.

SYRACUSE: Another week and another loss for the lowly Orange, who were crushed at home by UConn, 39-14. It was announced on Sunday that head coach Greg Robinson was being relieved of his duties, although he will finish out the season. Syracuse has won only nine games during Robinson's four-year tenure. Curtis Brinkley headed the charge for Syracuse (2-8,1-5), rushing for 94 yards and a touchdown on 21 carries. UConn scored all 17 points of the second half, with each score coming in the third quarter. The Orange turned the ball over three times, yielded five sacks and finished with just 147 total yards. The offense has struggled mightily all season, and Saturday was certainly no different. Up next for Syracuse is a road clash with non-conference foe Notre Dame this coming weekend.

WEST VIRGINIA: The Mountaineers were idle last weekend and will return to the field this Saturday against Louisville. Last time out, they rallied from 13 points down to force overtime against Cincinnati, but the result of the game was a heart-breaking 26-23 setback. Pat White completed 20-of-38 passes for 219 yards with two touchdowns and an interception for the Mountaineers (6-3, 3-1), who had won five straight to take over the top spot in the Big East. White rushed for 41 yards on 20 carries, and Noel Devine added 58 yards on 19 attempts for the Mountaineers, who scored 13 points in the last 1:11 only to fall in overtime. West Virginia had won all but two of the previous 16 meetings with the Bearcats, with one tie, prior to that tilt.
