NFL Fines Steelers' LaMarr Woodley For Hitting QuarterbackLinebacker Is Latest Pittsburgh Player To Be DisciplinedPOSTED: 1:38 pm EST November 7,
2008 PITTSBURGH -- Finding a FedEx envelope at his locker after Friday morning's practice, Steelers linebacker LaMarr Woodley opened it and learned that he is being fined $10,000 by the NFL.The fine was handed out for a hit that Woodley made on Washington Redskins quarterback Jason Campbell during the Steelers' 23-6 victory Monday night.Woodley was not penalized by referees on the field, but league officials reviewed a tape of the game and decided that Woodley threw Campbell to the ground while sacking him.James Farrior, Woodley's teammate on the defensive line, said he doesn't understand the fine and thinks it's ridiculous."I can't believe it. It's getting worse and worse every week," said Farrior. "It seems like the stuff that we do -- the normal plays that we make on the field -- we're getting fined and it's getting a little bit ridiculous."Woodley, a second-year player from Michigan, is having a breakout season with 9.5 sacks, two forced fumbles and one interception. He and James Harrison, with his 10 sacks, have a greater combined sack total than any other two teammates in the NFL.The Steelers have been disciplined by the league several times this year for non-penalized instances of roughness. Wide receiver Hines Ward has been the biggest culprit, racking up thousands of dollars in fines.Last month, the NFL sent a representative to Pittsburgh for a meeting with Coach Mike Tomlin and team captains to explain the reasons behind the fines. After that meeting, Ward told radio station KISS 96.1 that he still wasn't clear on what he was doing wrong.
