NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell hopes a deal between the league and the Rooney family can be worked out soon.

The NFL commissioner said he was still trying to work something out that would resolve the Rooney family's ownership of the Steelers.

According to WTAE's news exchange partners the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review, Roger Goodell said on Monday that he was still trying to broker a deal that would resolve an impasse between the league and the Rooney family.

There's speculation Pittsburgh Steelers Chairman Dan Rooney could buy a majority of the franchise from his brothers by the end of the year. The Rooneys have run afoul of NFL rules that bar franchise owners from running casinos.

"I've been in very close touch with Dan and Art, including over the weekend. I think some progress is being made to in trying resolve the matter on behalf of the entire family and consistent with NFL rules. We have to get them in compliance with NFL rules, and Dan and his family are cooperating in trying to get them done. I'm hopeful it will get done sometime soon," said Goodell during an interview with the Trib in Washington, D.C.
