The Central Catholic Vikings faced their toughest challenge of the season Friday night, playing their first game since the death of friend and teammate Kyle Wilson.

Wilson, a junior running back, died Tuesday morning after suffering a stroke while watching a football game between McKeesport and Gateway in Monroeville last Thursday.

On Friday, the Vikings took the field with heavy hearts as they prepared to meet the Penn-Trafford Warriors, their opponents in the first round of the WPIAL playoffs.

The team was greeted by cheers from parents and students as two players held Wilson’s No. 23 jersey high.

“He was a big part of this school. When he passed away, our whole school was so upset. Our classes were quiet. Everybody loved him,” said student Shane Ireland.

The Central Catholic High School Varsity Lettermen’s Club passed out 500 hundred shirts with Wilson’s name and number on them as part of a planned tribute.

“We owe a lot to his parents that they knew this was going to be the place for Kyle,” said Jimbo Lamanna, of the Varsity Lettermen’s Club. “Kyle made Central Catholic a little bit better."

Before kickoff, Wilson’s picture was displayed on the scoreboard monitor while a moment of silence was observed in his honor.

Wilson’s father also took the field with his son’s teammates.

Fellow parents said the game was all about winning the game for Wilson.

Many who were touched by Wilson’s life said they are grateful for the time they shared with him.

“As a parent, I think that's why you hug your kid one more time at the end of the night,” said Lamanna.

Many described Wilson as funny and energetic – an energy that inspired his teammates and fellow students even in times of tragedy.

"I hope he's up in heaven and watches over us,” said Ireland.

Central Catholic shut out Penn-Trafford 42-0 and advanced to the next round of the playoffs.
