Lions Trade Williams To Dallas; Kitna On IR

Detroit Gets First, Third, Seventh Round Picks

Detroit Lions quarterback Jon Kitna was placed on the injured reserve list Tuesday due to a back injury, effectively ending his season with the club.

Further upending their offense, the Lions also struck a deal with the Cowboys just before the trade deadline on Tuesday that resulted in wide receiver Roy Williams being shipped to Dallas.

In exchange for Williams' services and its seventh round draft choice in 2009, Detroit will receive Dallas' first, third and sixth picks in next year's draft.

Williams, a fifth-year receiver out of Texas, has recorded 262 catches for 3,884 yards with 29 touchdowns in 60 career games.

Kitna, who had made 36 consecutive starts before Sunday's 12-10 loss to Minnesota, was sidelined for the contest with what was deemed to be a bad back. Team physician Dr. Kyle Anderson described the injury as an "acute exacerbation of a chronic condition."

Kitna originally left the Lions' Week 5, 34-7, loss to Chicago because of back spasms.

"After extensive examination and consultation with the team medical staff, it became clear that placing Jon on injured/reserve was the right decision," Lions general manager Martin Mayhew revealed Tuesday. "Jon and I met today and discussed moving forward with respect to his rehabilitation which will be done in coordination with our medical staff."

Dan Orlovsky replaced the veteran signal-caller in Week 5 and made his first career start under center in the Minnesota game.

Orlovsky went 12-for-21 with 150 yards and a touchdown in the start, but Ryan Longwell's 26-yard field goal with nine seconds to play doomed Detroit (0-5) to remain winless on the season.

Kitna had completed 68-of-120 passes for 758 yards with five touchdowns and five interceptions in four starts for Detroit this season.

Drew Stanton became the backup to Orlovsky on Sunday, and Drew Henson, just signed to the active roster, was designated as the third quarterback.
