The Steelers have signed two veteran running backs to fill the open holes on their roster.

Najeh Davenport and Gary Russell have been signed to one-year contracts. The team did not release any financial details.

The team was looking to fill two open spots after injuries sidelined running back Rashard Mendenhall and offensive guard Kendall Simmons for the rest of the season.

Davenport originally joined the Steelers as a free agent in 2006. He was released June 28, after the team had drafted Mendenhall and signed free agent Mewelde Moore.

Russell made the roster in 2007 as an undrafted rookie free agent. He was with the team for the first two games of this season before being released Sept. 20. He was added to the practice squad on Sept. 21 and promoted today to the active roster.

In a news release, the Steelers also announced that rookie offensive guard Doug Legursky and rookie defensive end Jordan Reffett were added to the team's practice squad. The Steelers made room for both players on the practice squad by promoting Russell and releasing safety Grant Mason.
