Pirates Slip By Phils In 12th

POSTED: 12:24 am EDT August 9, 2008

(Sports Network) - Steve Pearce's one-out double in the top of the 12th inning drove in the winning run, as the Pittsburgh Pirates blanked the Philadelphia Phillies, 2-0, in the opener of a three-game set at Citizens Bank Park.

Pittsburgh starter Paul Maholm scattered five hits over seven scoreless frames, but did not receive a decision. The lefty walked three and struck out a career-high 10 batters, including five in a row at one point. T.J. Beam (1-1) tossed two scoreless frames to get the win.

Freddy Sanchez had two hits and knocked in the other run for Pittsburgh, which has won two straight.

Joe Blanton stymied the Pirates, but came away with a no-decision after surrendering just one hit over seven strong innings. The right-hander walked two and equaled his season-high in strikeouts with seven. Les Walrond (0-1) allowed two runs on three hits in 1 1/3 innings to take the loss.

Jimmy Rollins and Shane Victorino each had two hits for the Phillies, who have gone scoreless over their last 23 innings. Philadelphia has dropped three of its last four games and now own only a one-game lead over the New York Mets for first place in the NL East. New York topped Florida 3-0 earlier Friday.

Ryan Doumit led off the top of the 12th with a double, moved up to third on a Brandon Moss groundout, and scored the first run of the game when Pearce ripped an RBI double down the left-field line. After Jose Bautista was intentionally walked, Clay Condrey replaced Walrond and fanned Luis Rivas. Then pinch-hitter Jack Wilson, who was scratched from the starting lineup with stiffness in his right shoulder, and Freddy Sanchez recorded consecutive infield singles making it a 2-0 game.

Craig Hansen issued consecutive one-out walks to Rollins and Victorino in the bottom half. Then Moss made a diving catch in left to take extra bases away from Chase Utley and Victorino was doubled off at first to end the game. Hansen earned his third save of the season and first in the NL for the effort.

The Phillies stranded a runner on third in the first and had two runners on with one away in the second, but failed to score as Eric Bruntlett grounded into 5-4-3 double play to spoil the rally. Maholm escaped another jam in the fifth. Rollins' infield single with two away prolonged the frame and Victorino followed with a walk, but the lefty fanned Utley to end the inning.

Sean Burnett took over on the mound for Pittsburgh in the eighth and Victorino greeted him with a single. Utley then popped out and Ryan Howard went down swinging. Denny Bautista came on in relief and, after Victorino swiped second, Pat Burrell flied out to the wall in left.

After Jayson Werth began the ninth with a walk, John Grabow was summoned from the Pirates bullpen and he retired Chris Coste before Bruntlett grounded into another twin-killing to send the game into extra innings.

J.C. Romero set down the first two batters in the top of the 10th. Brad Lidge entered the game and promptly served up a single to Pearce, who stole second. Lidge then issued consecutive walks to Bautista and Rivas to load the bases for Jason Michaels, who fouled out to end the threat. The Phillies then left the bases loaded in their half of the 10th.
