Phoenix, AZ -- (Sports Network) - Brandon Webb took a shutout into the ninth inning and survived a pesky Pirates rally, as the Diamondbacks ace became the first 16-game winner in the majors with Arizona's 3-1 win over Pittsburgh in the second test of a three-game series.Webb (16-4) allowed one run on nine hits, while walking none and striking out four in his third complete game of the year and 15th of his career. The right- hander recorded a whopping 21 ground-ball outs in the win. "[Webb] had a great sinker again today," D'Backs manager Bob Melvin said. "He didn't use that many breaking balls, he didn't have to. He got the double play balls when guys got on. That is his go to pitch and tonight it was as good as we have seen it this year."
Chris Young provided most of Arizona's offense with a two-run homer, as Arizona won its second straight game despite registering only six hits. Zach Duke (4-10) remains winless in his last 10 starts despite a solid seven- inning start, as the lefty was credited with two runs on four hits to go with a walk and six strikeouts for the Pirates, who have dropped four in a row. Doug Mientkiewicz went 2-for-4 while driving in Pittsburgh's only run. Duke showed signs off coming out of his recent funk, but a hiccup in the third was all Arizona needed to break through. Stephen Drew roped a two-out double and Young golfed a low, 1-2 breaking ball over the left-field wall for a 2-0 lead for the home team. "I made one bad decision against Brandon Webb that is all it takes," Duke said. "It was a curveball. It wasn't a bad pitch it just wasn't the right pitch. I just threw it in where he was looking. I have been doing very consistent work. I would say that this is an indication that it is moving in the right direction." Duke yielded just one hit after Young's 15th homer of the year, but his counterpart was even more dominant. Arizona added an insurance run in the eighth, as back-to-back, two-out doubles by Orlando Hudson and Conor Jackson made it a 3-0 game. Webb stayed in for the ninth looking for his second shutout of the year. But a ground-rule double by Freddy Sanchez followed by Mientkiewicz's run-scoring single spoiled the bid. The Pirates then put the tying runner on second, as Nate McLouth beat out an infield single, and a groundout from Ryan Doumit moved both runners into scoring position. But Webb bore down and fanned Brandon Moss and Jason Michaels to finish the off win. "I was trying to keep it down in the zone [in the ninth]," Webb said. "That is what I was doing all night but I knew I was down to my last batter." Game Notes Webb is undefeated in his eight most recent trips to the hill. Coming into the game, he sported a 4-0 mark with a 2.41 earned-run average over five career games against Pittsburgh...Pittsburgh is a mere 19-36 as the visiting club this year...The D'Backs also got great news before the game, inking pitcher Dan Haren to a four-year contract extension through the 2012 season...Game time: 1:55.
