The Pittsburgh Pirates continue to look to the future, trading outfielder Jason Bay for four young players in a three-way deal shortly before Major League Baseball's trade deadline Thursday.

General manager Neil Huntington said Bay went to the Boston Red Sox in exchange for relief pitcher Craig Hansen and outfielder Brandon Moss.

The Bucs also got third baseman Andy LaRoche -- the younger brother of Pirates first baseman Adam LaRoche -- and pitcher Bryan Morris from the Los Angeles Dodgers.

"When I went into the locker room to tell Jason, it was great news for him, but he was not anxious to leave Pittsburgh," Huntington said. "He loves his teammates and the town."

Hansen, Moss and LaRoche -- all currently in Triple-A -- will be promoted to the Pirates' roster immediately. Morris, a low-level Single-A prospect, will stay in the minors.

All-Star slugger Manny Ramirez was the centerpiece of the three-way trade. He was sent from Boston to the Dodgers.

This trade marks the Pirates' second big deal in July, as the franchise continues on pace to tie baseball's all-time record of 16 consecutive losing seasons.

Earlier this month, outfielder Xavier Nady and relief pitcher Damaso Marte were sent to the New York Yankees in exchange for pitcher Jeff Karstens and three minor-leaguers -- pitchers Daniel McCutchen and Ross Ohlendorf and outfielder Jose Tabata.

A former National League Rookie of the Year and two-time All-Star, Bay had long been rumored to be on the trading block. His current four-year contract with the Pirates was set to expire after the 2009 season.

The 29-year-old Bay is having one of his typically solid seasons, batting .282 with 22 home runs and 64 runs batted in, and a .375 on-base percentage. For his career, Bay has hit .281 with 140 home runs and 454 RBIs in 722 games.

"Mixed emotions," Huntington said. "Jason Bay is a tremendous person. He has many of the characteristics that we want to see in current and future Pirates."
