UPDATED: 11:44 am EDT June 4,
2008
PITTSBURGH -- The Pittsburgh Penguins are down but not out, which means the outdoor viewing party is coming back for Game 6 of the Stanley Cup final on Wednesday night. Also, the team is calling for another "whiteout," as it did for Games 3 and 4 at Mellon Arena. All fans attending Game 6 will receive a free, white T-shirt to wear.Throughout the playoffs, thousands of Pens fans have come to the arena with lawn chairs to watch free game broadcasts on the big screen at Gate 3.
On Saturday night, the outdoor crowd was so large that it spilled into the street, prompting Pittsburgh police to close Washington Place in front of the arena.Alcohol is not allowed in the outdoor game-watching area, and the Pens are asking fans not to bring grills or tents because of safety concerns. Also, fans are reminded that the HOV lanes on Interstate 279 north will be closed due to construction. Those driving from the north should plan accordingly. The Detroit Red Wings jumped out to a 3-1 lead over Pittsburgh in the best-of-seven Cup series, but the Pens avoided elimination by winning a thrilling Game 5 in three overtimes on Monday night.
