Women Linked To Clemens Could Be Questioned

Women May Be Asked About Pitcher's Alleged Steroid Use

Federal authorities could interview the women pitcher Roger Clemens allegedly had extramarital relationships with, the New York Times reported.

While his alleged relationships with country music singer Mindy McCready and the former wife of golfer John Daly, Paulette Dean Daly, are not related to Clemens' denials of drug use or his perjury investigation, the women could still be questioned to determine if they have any knowledge of the pitcher using performance-enhancing drugs, the newspaper reported.

During the government's investigation into whether former Giants slugger Barry Bonds committed perjury, officials interviewed Kimberly Bell, a woman who claimed she was the home-run king's former girlfriend.

Bell ended up testifying before the federal grand jury about Bonds' alleged steroid use.

Clemens issued a statement to the Houston Chronicle on Monday apologizing for his actions.

"I need to say that I have made mistakes in my personal life for which I am sorry,” Clemens said in a written statement. "I have apologized to my family and apologize to my fans."

The seven-time Cy Young Award winner did not offer an apology for, or admit to, his alleged steroid use. His former trainer Brian McNamee testified before Congress that he injected Clemens with performance-enhancing drugs. The pitcher denied the accusations under oath. The contradicting testimonies led authorities to open a federal investigation to determine if Clemens committed perjury.

"I realize that many people want me to simply confess and apologize for the conduct that I have been accused of," Clemens said. "But I cannot confess to, nor apologize for, things I did not do."

It has not yet been determined if Clemens' alleged extramarital affairs will have any affect on the defamation lawsuit he filed against McNamee.
