PITTSBURGH -- The Pittsburgh Pirates gave their fans a bobblehead doll over the weekend -- but what is the doll giving to the fans? One finger points outside the glove on pitcher Tom Gorzelanny's bobble, which was free to all fans at Saturday night's Pirates-Phillies game at PNC Park.Which finger is it -- the index, or the middle?
Pirates spokesman Jim Trdinich said the team sends photographs of players to a company that makes its bobbleheads, and the company tries to replicate those pictures as best they can when it designs the dolls.Trdinich said he can't tell which finger is sticking out of Gorzelanny's glove in the photo that went to the bobblehead company, but he said it was not done in bad taste.Gorzelanny's doll comes in a box with an action photograph of him on the side. In that picture, he does have a finger sticking through his glove, but the camera angle makes it difficult to see which finger it is.It's not unusual for a pitcher to have one or two fingers pointing through the hole in the back of his glove while he's on the mound.Other Pirates bobbleheads have also been designed with a finger outside a glove, including the doll of ex-pitcher Bob Walk that was given away last year, Trdinich said.About two dozen people were trying to sell the Gorzelanny bobblehead on eBay Monday afternoon.
