Mayor Luke Ravenstahl took a chainsaw to a Detroit Red Wings sign and ate some octopus at a downtown Stanley Cup playoff rally on Friday.

"Pack the Square" was the theme of the free noontime event for Pittsburgh Penguins fans at Market Square.

Many of them wore black-and-gold clothing and chanted "Let's Go Pens" to get ready for Saturday night's Game 1 of the Stanley Cup final series with the Detroit Red Wings.

Because Detroit fans have a tradition of throwing an octopus on the ice, a representative of Wholey's Fish Market in the Strip District showed up at the rally with some octopus to chow on.

    Fans Are Talking

Here's what you're saying about the Pittsburgh-Detroit series on ThePittsburghChannel.com's message board:

Title Town says, "I cant wait to see the excuses that will be posted on this message board by the time the series move to your beloved city... I don't need your local market to supply me with the monster octopus I will be throwing on your ice. I will simply bring it up with me in my truck and keep it in a cooler. I cant wait to see the look in all of your faces after I throw it on the ice."

PanthersFB says, "Let's Go Pens! I'm outnumbered here in Michigan (about 45 miles north of Detroit) but my Pens flag is flying proudly."

squidward says, "Ain't it kinda odd that the new American Idol is (Petr) Sykora in disguise."

mucker7187 says, "It's absolutely amazing how some people can be when Lord Stanley's Cup is on the line. To say that Zetterberg and Datsyuk are more talented than Crosby and Malkin at this point or ANY point in their career is insane. That is like trying to compare Bill Laimbeer to Michael Jordan or even better... Gordie Howe to Mario Lemieux. Please go read a book on NHL hockey prowess. GO PENS!"

dant3260 says, "Every team the Pens faced so far was beat up and without some of their best players. The Wings can control the puck and eventually Marc-Andre Fleury will revert to his usual suspect goaltending. I think the Wings win in 5. The Pens will never win a cup with Fleury in goal... he has no glove hand!"

deb56ster says, "As a Pens fan, you learn to never give up, never quit. And just remember what happened the last time a Pittsburgh sports team (Steelers) went to Detroit. If memory serves, I believe it went down as a WIN. Go Pens!"

    Who's Hot?

Pens captain Sidney Crosby (four goals and 17 assists) and Detroit's Henrik Zetterberg (11 goals, 10 assists) are tied for the NHL lead in playoff scoring with 21 points.

Evgeni Malkin and Marian Hossa are in a three-way tie with Detroit's Pavel Datsyuk for third place with 19 points (nine goals and 10 assists each).

Detroit's Johan Franzen is the playoffs' top goal-scorer with 12.

Pens goaltender Marc-Andre Fleury has allowed just 24 goals in 14 games. He leads the NHL in playoff shutouts (3) and wins (12), and his goals-against average is second only to Detroit's Chris Osgood.
