PITTSBURGH -- On Saturday, PNC Park is opening its doors, and the Pittsburgh Pirates are inviting fans to select their seats for the upcoming season. Many people say baseball tickets are too expensive and not worth the money. The Pirates, along with 12 other teams, are trying to change that notion with a revolutionary and somewhat controversial concept -- the "All You Can Eat Seats."The $17 section of right-field seats will now cost up to $40, but you will get more than just baseball. The tickets will allow you to eat as much as you want, too.
"You have hamburgers, hot dogs, popcorn," said Pirates spokesman Brian Warecki. "We also have a healthy option in a salad."Beer and water is not included, but you do get your own concession stand."It will be a speed-line approach, to where you can walk right through the concession stand and grab the food you like and move on, as opposed to waiting in line and have a transaction, so it's value and it's also convenience," said Warecki.Sitting and watching baseball, along with unlimited food, is a recipe for obesity, according to UPMC nutritionist Leslie Bonci said."Now you could eat two to three times the amount of food you potentially do, and you may not be fitting into those seats by the time the season is done," Bonci said."It comes down to parents watching their kids, handling the intake of food that they're going to have," said Warecki. "I would say the majority of fans aren't going to grab any more than they would in another area."Bonci disagreed."The Pirates are offering salad, and that is great," she said. "But they are also offering other kinds of things that we will be eating a lot of, because it's a 'Field of Dreams' mentality. If it's there, we eat it."Pirates tickets go on sale at 10 a.m. Saturday. For more information, visit Pirates.com.
